# Amoxicillin vs Amoxicillin-Clavulanate in Nigeria: when is the stronger (and costlier) one actually worth it?

**The short answer:** Amoxicillin remains the right first choice for straightforward infections. Augmentin is amoxicillin plus clavulanate — a shield against resistant bacteria — and earns its higher price when a course of amoxicillin has failed, or the infection is one where resistance is common, like sinusitis or some ear infections. It is not simply 'stronger amoxicillin for faster results'.

This is probably the most common antibiotic upgrade question in Nigeria, and the honest answer is that many people buy Augmentin when amoxicillin would have done the job.
