About Buspirone
Buspirone is an anti-anxiety medicine that belongs to no other common class — it is not a benzodiazepine, not an antidepressant, and not a sedative. It acts as a partial agonist at the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor, and the practical consequence is unusual: it treats persistent anxiety without causing sedation, without impairing driving, and without causing dependence. That last property is what makes it interesting, because the medicines most often used for anxiety in Nigeria — diazepam and its relatives — are exactly the ones that create dependence.
