Antibiotics are bought in Nigeria the way painkillers are bought elsewhere — freely, frequently, and often without a prescription. Amoxicillin, Augmentin, ciprofloxacin, and metronidazole (Flagyl) move in enormous volumes through pharmacies and patent medicine stores, for everything from chest infections to typhoid to 'stomach upset'. That easy access cuts both ways: treatment is fast when you genuinely need it, but Nigeria now has some of the highest antibiotic resistance rates recorded anywhere, driven by incomplete doses and antibiotics taken for viral illnesses they cannot touch.

The practical rules are unglamorous but they work: match the drug to the infection (which usually means seeing a pharmacist or doctor rather than self-prescribing), finish the full course even after you feel better, and be suspicious of very cheap 'branded' antibiotics — Augmentin in particular is a known counterfeit target because of its price.
