Dapagliflozin vs Empagliflozin: which SGLT2 inhibitor — and does the choice really matter?

Dapagliflozin and empagliflozin are both SGLT2 inhibitors: they make the kidneys pass excess sugar out in the urine, which lowers blood sugar without relying on insulin, sheds a little weight and blood pressure, and — the reason these drugs changed practice — protects the heart and kidneys. Both are once-daily tablets, both rarely cause sugar crashes on their own, and both carry the same characteristic nuisance: more urination and a higher chance of genital thrush.

Their evidence bases have different emphases — empagliflozin made its name in heart-outcome trials, dapagliflozin in heart-failure and kidney trials that included people without diabetes — but regulators and guidelines now treat the class as broadly interchangeable for the shared uses. In Nigeria the register, not the trial history, is usually what decides: which brands are actually registered, stocked near you, and priced so you can take the tablet every day rather than in bursts.
