Bone Health Drugs in Nigeria

Osteoporosis is barely diagnosed in Nigeria and quietly common — bones thin silently for decades and announce themselves as a hip or spine fracture after a fall that should have caused a bruise. The gap between what is used elsewhere and what is registered here is unusually wide in this category. Alendronate, the cheap weekly tablet that is first-line osteoporosis treatment across most of the world, holds no NAFDAC registration; nor do risedronate or raloxifene, nor denosumab. What Nigeria does have registered is zoledronic acid, an infusion given once a year, and teriparatide — options most countries hold in reserve.

That makes the unglamorous half of bone health matter more here, not less. Adequate calcium and vitamin D underpin every osteoporosis treatment there is and are cheap and widely available; weight-bearing exercise and not smoking do real work; and long courses of steroids such as prednisolone thin bone in a way worth discussing with a doctor before, rather than after. A fracture from a minor fall after 50 is a medical event, not bad luck — it is the moment to ask about bone density rather than only about the plaster cast.
