Hormone Disorders Drugs in Nigeria

Hormone conditions are diagnosed late in Nigeria and treated with a narrow set of tools. Thyroid disease is the common one — levothyroxine for an underactive thyroid is registered and available, though carbimazole for an overactive thyroid currently has no active registration in our copy of the register. The rarer pituitary conditions are where the gaps widen: cabergoline and bromocriptine are registered for prolactin-secreting tumours, but the somatostatin analogues used in acromegaly and neuroendocrine tumours — lanreotide and octreotide — are absent from the register entirely.

Two practical notes. Thyroid symptoms are vague enough to be dismissed for years, and a simple blood test settles the question: unexplained fatigue, weight change, hair loss or feeling cold all the time deserve one rather than a tonic. And for the rare pituitary and neuroendocrine conditions, the routes that exist in Nigeria are surgical and specialist rather than pharmaceutical — a teaching-hospital endocrinology service is the right first call, including about named-patient import of medicines that hold no Nigerian registration.
