Sulfate, fumarate, gluconate — is it all the same iron?

Yes and no. The brands below use different iron salts — ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate. Each is the same iron (Fe²⁺) bonded to a different partner molecule; once dissolved, the body absorbs the same thing from all of them, and all treat and prevent iron-deficiency anaemia. What changes is how much actual (elemental) iron each milligram of salt carries, because the partner molecule takes up different amounts of the weight:
